Iran beat Indonesia in penalty shoot-out to win 14th Futsal Asian Cup

February 11 – Iran kept up their remarkable dominance of Asian Futsal with their 14th title last weekend, beating hosts Indonesia in the Asian Cup 2026 final.

It was the 18th edition of the Asian Futsal Cup.

The Iranians had to come back three times from being behind the Indonesians in front of their raucous and passionate support. The match ended 5-5.

With nerves frayed tension in the Indonesia Arena in Jakarta reaching almost unbearable levels, Iran secured their title in a 5-4 shootout win with Hossein Sabzi converting the decisive penalty.

A total of 64,381 fans attended matches at the Indonesia Arena and Jakarta International Velodrome, being treated to a goalfest of of 166 goals in the 31 matches.

Iran’s 7-4 victory against Uzbekistan in the quarter-final was the highest scoring match, while there was only one match which ended goalless, which was the Group C tie between Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.

Iran topped the scoring with 27 goals, of which Hossein Tayebi contributed six.

For Indonesia the hosting was a major success on and off the court.  As runners-up they beat their previous best performances, having only previously reached the quarter-final once in 2022.

AFC President Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa congratulated Iran for their win and ongoing excellence in the format and Indonesia for their “tenacity and dynamism to reach the final”.

“Both the Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran and the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) deserve our plaudits not only for their commitment towards growing the love for the sport but also for producing formidable squads capable of succeeding at the highest levels, as underlined in the AFC’s Vision and Mission,” said Salman.

He reserved special praise for the PSSI organisers: “Both in football and futsal, we have seen Indonesia reach new summits of excellence across all levels and credit must go to the PSSI for the concrete steps taken to transform and elevate the standards of the game across its passionate fanbase,” he said.

“Hosting the AFC’s premier futsal competition represents another fine example of the PSSI’s ambitions to raise the profile of the sport, and whilst we thank them for their desire to take on this proud responsibility, we must also applaud their historic success, and we are confident that it is a sign of more to come from Indonesia.”
