Club Universidad Nacional, better known as Pumas UNAM, is one of Mexico’s most historic clubs. Based in Mexico City and affiliated with the National Autonomous University (UNAM), they boast a passionate fanbase and a strong tradition in Liga MX. Pumas are three-time winners of the Concacaf Champions Cup.
In the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup, Pumas made it to the quarterfinals before losing against the Vancouver Whitecaps on away goals.
Pumas are led by Efraín Juárez, a former Mexican international defender who transitioned into coaching. Juárez brought energy and organization to the side, combining aggressive pressing with disciplined defending. Crucially, Juárez has previous MLS experience playing with the Vancouver Whitecaps and then assisting at NYFC as they won MLS CUp in 2021.
One of Pumas’ most impactful players in the Champions Cup was Rogelio Funes Mori. The Argentine striker has lots of experience, and possesses aerial ability, and composure in front of goal making him a focal point of Pumas’ attack and a constant threat to opposing defenses.
Ignacio Pussetto, links with Mori creating chances and scoring to create a potent double threat. His pace, positional sense, and his positional play add variety to Pumas’ offense. While sharing the spotlight, his consistent contributions helped sustain the team’s attacking intensity on the continental stage.
For a club with rich history, the Champions Cup remains both a proving ground and a stage to reinforce their continental stature.
